Medical drama.

I’ve fallen behind on my “I’m thankful” for posts. I plan to sum up in a bit. But first, a post about our adventures in health care.
Last night Landon was playing on the floor in front of the TV, counting his money, which is mostly coins. Oliver was watching the TV and playing with his stuffed toy. All of the sudden, Bobby and I hear choking. We both go running to the kids, and before I’ve had time to process which kid is choking, Bobby’s got Landon turned upside down and is banging on his back in exactly the way we were trained to do in our first aid class.
After a few seconds, Landon coughed up a little bit of liquid, but no solid objects. We asked him what the heck happened, and he admitted to having swallowed a quarter. I picked up a penny, dime, and quarter and asked him which size he swallowed and he pointed at the dime. I noted that all the coins were covered in what I can only assume were salvia. So basically he’d been sucking on coins, and for some reason accidently swallowed one. Worried after how dramatic the whole thing was, I called the doctor, who said we needed to take him to get x-rayed. Luckily our local Good Night Pediatrics has X-ray machines.
Landon kept complaining that he could feel the coin in his throat, and that it was blocking his voice.
So I took him for an X-ray. Wanna see the coin he swallowed? It’s down in his intestine, around where his belly button is. See the shiny disk shape there?
Landon's coin

Anyway, there are three “choke points” where the coin can get stuck, and this coin made it past all three. Not sure if it’s a dime or a quarter, but he’ll poop it out at some point today.

And in other news, Oliver had his tonsils, and adenoids out today, as well as tubes put in. I’ll tell you about our day in pictures:
We had to be at the hospital at 7AM, which wasn’t too big of a problem. Ollie didn’t seem to really notice the lack of food or drink. Here he is waiting to be admitted.

Once we got the paperwork done we went to the second floor for surgery. We hung out in the waiting room for about 10 minutes before getting called back. Ollie got weighed and measured and we changed into these cute purple clothes that have kola’s in spaceships all over them. Then they brought us this cool car to walk around and entertain ourselves with. Oliver enjoyed “driving” around the block in it, and the walking was better than just sitting.

First I told the nurse Oliver’s medical history, then I told the anesthesiologist, and finally went over it with the ENT again. I got the details on what to expect, and kept Oliver entertained by more walking, or watching some TV. Finally, at 9:05AM, the nurses buckled him into the car and walked him to surgery.
I went downstairs and ordered all of his medical records, and then I walked over to the café for an iced tea. I took my drink back and sat down in the waiting room. It seemed like no time at all and the doctor was out to tell me everything went fine, no issues or worries. Oliver did have a bunch of sludgy mucus behind his ears that had to be vacuumed out.
I had been told they’d call me back before he woke, but by the time we went back there, Oliver was awake and SCREAMING. He wanted the bloody IV out NOW. He kept trying to take it off and he just kept screaming. His poor voice sounded so raw. It took about 15 minutes of me holding him and talking to him, and finally getting some Yo Gabba Gabba on the TV to calm him down. Once he was calm, he drank two juice boxes of apple juice.
Eventually we got wheeled up to our room for the night. He’s being kept overnight due to his history and his age. That way they can monitor him. The doctor said he might need a little O2 tonight, but we’ll see. He’d got his pulse oxygen monitor thing on his toe, most of the time, except when he kicks it off.
He basically spent most of the afternoon chilling out in my lap.

Or in Dada’s lap, when Bobby brought me lunch.

Grandma and Aunt Heather stopped by to talk to him and brought him a cool balloon. Ollie’s eaten two small jars or applesauce and he had two more juice boxes. He fell asleep around 3ish and is still sleeping.

And that’s my day so far!

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Nine: My workout buddies

Today I’m thankful for Liz, Mel, Laura, and Amy. I’m also thankful for Aaron, the personal trainer at my work.

Thanks to them, I’m getting in regular workouts, and not gaining weight despite my atrocious eating habits of late.

Ya’ll rock. Thank you.

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Eight: Bobby’s Cooking

It was a long day today, but I’m thankful for my husband’s amazing cooking. I got home and Bobby made us Salad and Roasted Cauliflower, which was so freaking good. And then he started work on some truffles for us to eat for dessert tonight. He just let me lick the spoon. SO GOOD.

Bobby’s skills in the kitchen are such a life saver. With Bobby being gluten free, Landon being Dairy free, and Ollie being Soy and Dairy free, feeding the family can be a challenge. But it’s a challenge Bobby has continuously risen to. He made a test cake the other day that was everyone safe, and it was so tasty.

My kids may have a special diet, but they get a special and TASTY cake every year for their birthday, and get to enjoy a lot of other wonderful foods besides.

And I love tasty food myself too.

Thank you Bobby! (Picture is a few months old)

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Seven: Hench Kids

This weekend was wild, we watched Laura’s three kids (Damia 12, Elaria 11, and Darion 7) for the weekend. We had a blast with them. They mostly were little angels, and they played well with my boys.

We always have a blast when they spend the weekend with us. They really are like cousins or siblings, for all the time they spend together and how well they play together.

The older two helped me keep tabs on the younger ones, and I got a little extra sleep in the mornings thanks to their help.

Having kids like this in our lives makes for some awesome memories and makes me happy to know that Landon and Oliver will have life long friends.

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Six: Pictures

I am thankful for all the pictures I have of various family and friends, of the pictures I have of cool things and arty things. Of all the pictures of cats and kids and babies. Of pretty much all pictures everywhere.

I love pictures! And I love taking pictures!

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Five: Health Care

I am thankful for health care.

I am thankful that I have good health insurance that covers us when scary things happen, or when kids have ear infections. I’m thankful I don’t have to agonize of whether or not to take my kids to the doctor or buy them food.

I am thankful for the medicine we have available for my family to stop pain and help us heal.

I’m thankful for emergency rooms, urgent cares, and primary care doctors.

I’m thankful for nurses, doctors, surgeons, and other support staff in the medical industry. I’m thankful for the people who knew what to do, and who were able to offer comfort.

I am so thankful, that when Oliver got sick, we were able to go to the hospital, that we played it safe, even though it was “just a fever.” Because if we hadn’t had all of that available, if we hadn’t been in the hospital, Ollie would have died. There is no doubt. He stopped breathing. I am so thankful we were there, where he could get help, where he could be saved. The medicines that kept him going for those first few days afterward were a gift. I am so thankful.

And I’m thankful that my health insurance covered most of the cost, because the bill was for more than my house and both my cars put together cost me.

Getting to hold him for the first time after everything was so amazing, this was one of the best days of my life:

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Four: Chocolate

Today is a crazy day, and I don’t have much time to stop and be thankful.

But I am thankful for so many things. I picked an easy topic for today, I’m thankful for Chocolate. Especially thankful for the Moonstruck Chocolate I have hidden in my desk.

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Three: Bobby

I am so thankful for my husband. Most of you know, we met in high school, and have been a couple since 1995. We knew we were going to get married after having only been together for three months, but we decided to wait until at least one of finished college.
Bobby loves to make other people happy. He gets joy from the joy others have. He has this driving desire to make everyone better. It’s amazing to watch him talk to people, to see what he is willing to do for other. Despite this, he puts Landon, Oliver, and I first. Sometimes I worry because I know he’ll wear himself out trying to make others happy. Bobby is crazy smart, although he claims to be just “average” when asked. He takes the time to really understand things that interest him, or things that he feels are important.
Bobby take the time to make sure we have the things we need, and the things that make us happy. He’s always willing to step up and take on issues or take care of our children. He is an amazing father to the boys, he plays with them and teaches them.
I’m so thankful to have a partner in this life who is my best friend, who I love more than words can ever express. I have a partner who is supportive and sweet, romantic and practical, and very, very sexy.

I am so thankful for Bobby, and so lucky to have him in my life!

40 Days of Thanksgiving Day Two: Landon

If you couldn’t guess that day two was going to be Landon, I’m not sure if you have been paying attention to my journal at all. I am very thankful for Landon.

Landon is such an amazing, precocious, adorable little boy. He’s super smart, super bossy, and very talkative. Landon makes me laugh and makes me so proud.

Landon reminds me so much of me at that age that it is insane.

I am so proud to be his mom, and so lucky too!

40 days of Thanksgiving Day one: Oliver

I suspect I’m going to fail at doing this every day.

I’ve seen this meme going around, and I think it’s a pretty good idea. There are exactly forty days until (American) Thanksgiving (including today and the day of). So the concept is to post one thing you are thankful for each day.

I’m going to start off Day one with Ollie.

I am thankful for my Oliver. He’s had so many issues, and we came SO CLOSE to losing him. I don’t like to think about how close. He’s such an amazing little boy. He has the best smile, I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to see him smile. Last night I took the boys to the park, and Ollie was just thrilled to be there. He loved the swings, the slide. He was happy to play, and did not throw a fit when it was time to go home.

Also, he did something he rarely does, something I can’t really remember him doing for me. He asked me to pick him up. Not with words, mind you. But normally he never wants to be picked up, or, on the rare occasion he thinks it might be a good idea, he demonstrates this by throwing himself to the ground, or sometimes just sitting down and not going. Instead, on the way home, he took my hand and reached up with his other hand. And was rather happy to be picked up.

My Oliver is taking up a lot of my time and energy right now, but he is worth it. I love him so much and I’m so thankful to have him.
