Happy Ollie

Ollie's scar

The last picture is of a scar that Ollie has from his time in the hospital. It is from where the central line is placed. If you look, there are three small scars that form a triangle on his neck.

Christmas 2009

On Christmas eve we sat down and each opened one present, as is the tradition in our house. Landon set the tone for the rest of Christmas by opening Ollie’s present for him, as a helpful older brother.

From Christmas 09

Landon and Daddy made some dairy free and gluten free cookies. We frosted them and spent some time decorating them for Santa to eat. Landon really liked the cookies.

Landon slept very well on Christmas eve night, so that Santa could come and leave presents. He left a nice haul for both Landon and Ollie.

Landon enjoyed opening all gifts under the tree. He “helped” Ollie with all of his, which was a good thing, since Oliver spent most of the morning asleep, as is his habit. Landon got some cool stuff, including an awesome Batman shirt, a ton of books, and many “things with wheels.” Oliver got some books and some clothes as well.

After Christmas morning, we spent a lot of time opening the boxes gifts came in, which is always a trial when opening presents meant for young kids. Toys are over packaged these days. We managed to get everything open and put away, and then have a nice lunch. After nap we went out to Grandma and Grandpa’s house for the big family gathering and Christmas celebration. Almost everyone was there this year, Landon and Ollie were missing one cousin and one uncle. Both boys got a ton more gifts

Since not everyone was there, we didn’t get a family photo, but we did get a good picture with most of the Grandkids:

I got some pretty cool stuff myself, one of my favorite things was a book that Bobby got me called Isle of Illusion by Madeleine Simon. It’s one of the Heartquest books, which is a choose your own adventure type of book, aimed at girls. I own books 1-3 although one of those is in pieces. There were six books total, Bobby found me book four. I’m still looking for books 5 and 6. I also got, at my request, some new perfume, dice, and nice shower gels.

And Heather and her family made us this awesome picture that has Landon and Olivers astrological signs and animals in it. I love it.

My favorite thing, is what Landon made us in school.
He gave us a Christmas ornament, and Mike and Amy also sent us this cool wine cork ornament!

I dreamt of my father last night….

Most of the time, my dreams, no matter how real or clear, are gone by the time I get to this point of the day, however last night’s dream is still with me.
I dreamt of my father. It’s always weird when I do. Often, in the dream, I am unaware that he has been dead for the past 8 years. In the dream, I was here, in this house, a place my father never was. There was someone at my door, and they had keys, like they were letting themselves in. I heard the keys in the door, and so I got up and opened the door. My father was standing there, and I was surprised to see him. He explained that he thought we weren’t awake yet, so that’s why he was letting himself in. We talked about things, and he wanted a glass of milk. I don’t remember most of the dream, but his face at my door, that’s etched in my mind.
It’s weird how the memories come at such odd times. I think part of it is that Ollie does resemble my dad to me, so he’s been on my mind. I will always be sad that he never met his grandchildren, and I will always be grateful that he was there to walk me down the aisle the day I married Bobby.
I love dreaming about my father, it always makes me happy, and in the dreams, I am always happy. But when I wake up, there is always a moment where it occurs to me that I dreamt about my father, and that he is dead. And in that moment, I feel such a sense of loss. I miss my daddy.

00 in review

2000- At the start of the year I am in living with Bobby in Mesa in the rental house while I attend ASU. I’m working for FedEx Ground in the call center. We buy our first new car, a 2000 Jeep Wrangler. Bobby graduates from DeVry with his bachelors, and gets offered the job in Portland OR. Ten weeks before our wedding, Bobby packs up and moves to Tigard, OR. I remain in AZ and plan our wedding while also working on an internship with Motorola. Bobby returns to AZ for our wedding, and we head to Hawaii for our honeymoon. Upon our return to AZ, we pack up the house. Bobby flies back to Oregon, but I drive up with our stuff. My Dad and I pack up the cats in the jeep and drive up, following behind Bobby’s parents, who drive a truck with all of our stuff in it. Dad and I have a good time together on this drive. I start attending Portland State University, and we go house hunting. We buy our first house, a cute little three bedroom in Portland, OR. I get a part time seasonal gig at Mervyn’s and use the discount to furnish our house.
2001- I continue to attend school, but switch to part time due to the cost. If I attend part time I can pay in state tuition. Since I’m only going to school part time, I get a full time job. I’m working third party customer service for GM. I meet my good friend Mike at this terrible job, which was the best thing about the job. We start gaming with Mike and his wife, along with Fyr and Nick. The six of us hang out pretty much all the time from 2001-2005. In August of 2001, my father is driving from AZ to TX, and goes missing. He’s found almost dead three days later. Turned out he had a stroke in his car at a gas station in New Mexico. He dies in route to the hospital. We come home for the funereal. In October, I start working as a manager on the docks at night for FedEx Ground. I have to be at work by 2:30AM and get off work around 8:30AM, give or take about 90 minutes. Sabrena, our German Sheppard, gets out of our yard and attacks someone. No one was hurt, but we end up having to put her down as a result.
2002- Not a very eventful year for us. We play lots of role-playing games, see lots of movies, hang out a lot and eat out a lot with our group of friends. We added Russia to our family, a pure bred Basenji. Unfortunately, she gets very ill in late November, we spend a ton of money on her, but end up losing her to a mystery illness. Bobby goes back to school to get his Masters. We adopt Columbia. Bobby and I spend our second wedding anniversary in Seattle at a swank hotel.
2003- I start blogging for the first time. I finally complete my bachelor’s degree from Portland State. I get promoted at FedEx to full time, but I discover that working from 9pm to 9am 5 days a week is not conducive to being married, having friends, or even being a nice person. Bobby and I have a rough time due to this, and in the end, I jump on the first job I am offered that will take me off nights. Unfortunately, this job turns out to be more sales than managerial, and I hate it with a burning passion. Mike and his wife drive up to Settle with Bobby and I to see Wrestlemania live. Bobby got contacts. I trade in the Jeep for a Hyundai Elantra. We go to our first LARP. The six of us enjoyed a joint birthday dinner on “The Portland Spirit” which is a boat that tours one of the rivers in Portland. This is one of my favorite birthdays ever. We adopt our second Basenji, (and our last) India.
2004- I quit the job I hate and get a job I love at Mercer Delta. I fly to Illnois to visit my mother (she moved there at some point) My Maternal Grandpa dies. Bobby gets his Masters. I get “baby fever,” but Bobby isn’t ready yet. We start talking about moving back to AZ. We have an awesome 4th of July by driving out to Bay City on the coast and taking a train to Rockway Beach to watch fireworks with the same group we always hang out with. I decide I’m getting fat (I’m over 200lbs) and I start working out and eating right.
2005- a big year for us. Bobby gets a promotion at work to project management. We decide to leave Portland and move back home to AZ. We put our house on the market and I quit my job. We move to AZ, and move in with Bobby’s parents. I get my job with my current company! It’s the height of the housing boom, so after much discussion, we buy some land and decide to move into an apartment in Chandler while we build our own house in Apache Junction. I lose a total of 45 lbs before finally deciding to start trying to get pregnant. We get pregnant with Landon. I show up on Laura’s doorstep and discover that Dirk had a really bad accident. Bobby and I start attending Thursday night dinner with the hench, and our reunited with old friends, while also making some new, wonderful, and lasting friendships. I have my last Thanksgiving with my paternal Grandma.
2006- Bobby spends a lot of time out of state working on projects while I worry about growing our son. Bobby also works very hard on getting the house built. At the start of the year, Grandma Eve dies, which was rough on me, but was expected. Bobby participates in his first half marathon. Landon is born, and we move into the house in Apache Junction. We meet Jamie, Gyan, and Emily.
2007- My mom comes out for a visit and meets Landon. We take Landon to Portland, in order to attend the wedding of some of our friends. We spend a lot of time watching Landon grow and hanging out with the Hench. We sell my car, and buy Bobby his minivan and me my current car.
2008- We take Landon to see the snow for the first time, and I take Landon to Illinois so he can meet his Great Grandma and spend time with his grandma. Landon also takes swim lessons. We return to Portland for the fourth of July and have some fun. We get pregnant for the second time, (with Meeple) but I miscarry at the end of the first trimester. Bobby takes me to a Tom Petty concert. My mom gets engaged.
2009- We get pregnant for the third time, this time with Oliver. We end up moving from the house we love in AJ to a nice house in Mesa. Landon starts preschool, attending with his friend Emily. Oliver is born, beautiful and healthy, but at one week old gets very ill and spends time in ICU.

Oliver is doing very well, he’s past the six week mark, and at his one month appointment the doctor told me that he looked “like a perfectly normal, healthy, one month old baby.” So hopefully that is the case!
Last night Ollie only woke up once! (The first time that has happened!) He got up around 2AM and ate. Then he woke up this morning around 7am. Hurrah for sleep!
Landon is doing well in school, and he’s adjusting okay to life as a big brother. I am really looking forward to when the two of them can really play together.
Bobby is annoyed at his work.
And I’m feeling good again. I had my six week postpartum checkup and everything looks great with me.
I don’t have to go back to work until March, so I’m pretty happy.

Landon letter 3.4

Dear Landon-
So sorry to have missed the past couple of months, but things here have been pretty busy. Today you are three years and four months old. You are getting so big! And you still have the prettiest blue eyes I have ever seen.
The biggest change in your life was the welcoming of your baby brother Oliver into the world last month. Due to restrictions at the hospital, you weren’t able to meet Ollie until after school on Nov 5th. Dad brought you home from school, and you came over to where I was sitting with Oliver on the couch. You looked at him, and then told me that baby brother was “too scary” and that I should “put him back in your belly!” I explained that he was too big, but you wanted nothing to do with him. For the first few days you would not even get close enough to touch Oliver. The first picture of you together had to be photo-shopped so that you would be close enough to Ollie for me to make gifts with it. It was six days before I could get you touch Ollie. Now, however, you don’t mind him too much. You are learning to be a tolerant older brother. You will talk too or touch Oliver, and if I bribe you with candy, you will even pose for pictures with him.
That being said, Oliver was very sick last month and was in the hospital for 2 weeks. You spent the bulk of that time with Grandma and Grandpa, since I was in the hospital with Oliver. Your dad did take care of you a lot too, and you spent time with Aunt Heather and your cousins as well. You had a great time, even if you did miss us very much. Something odd did happen while you were with grandma; you had another mini language explosion. I think it might have been because you were with people who didn’t know all your speech habits for so long, that you had to improve so you could tell them what to do! You sure are a bossy little thing.
Halloween passed while we waited for your little brother to be born. You were Wow Wow Wubbzy for Halloween this year. You picked out that costume at the store yourself, and that makes this is the first year you chose your own costume. Your dad and I also took you to a pumpkin patch, where you decorated a pumpkin and picked out another one to carve with dad. Your preschool hosted a “Fall Festival,” and you and Emily both had a lot of fun attending! Emily is your very best friend, and your favorite thing about going to school seems to be spending time with her.
We took you to the State fair in October for the first time. You really had a blast. I was worried you wouldn’t like the rides, but you loved them. You even drove the kiddie bumper cars yourself. I was most impressed because you insisted on riding the Ferris wheel. You normally seem to have a fear of heights. You don’t like to be picked up to high in the air, and you are often afraid to slide down slides. You loved the Ferris wheel.
I had to call Poison control for the first time ever in October. You decided your new favorite snack is toothpaste. You were fine, and we moved the toothpaste to the top shelf. Then you climbed up there and got into it again, so now your toothpaste lives in our bathroom.
You spent Thanksgiving at Grandma’s house, and Uncle Jack was there too. You had a lot of fun, even if Mom and Dad weren’t able to attend.
Your current obsession is “Krypto the Superdog” You want to watch this show all the time. I am already burned out on it! You also have recently been enjoying “The Upside Down Show” and watching “The Aristacats” and “Madagascar.” You still love Cars and Wall-E as well. You enjoy reading the “Little Critter” books by Mercer Mayer.
You also have a new saying. When you get angry and want someone to say, stop singing along, you will tell them that they are “Making me dangerous.” As in, “Aunt Heather, stop singing, you’re making me dangerous.” It’s adorable. You have also threatened to put your father in a corner, and you’ve tried “counting” to make us do as you will. It’s all cute for now. Mostly you are well behaved. We’ve had some trouble with you not sleeping through the night though. We’re not sure why this is going on.
Overall, it’s been an eventful past few months. You are finally getting used to being a big brother, and are even willing to hold Oliver now. You like to bring him a pacifier, and when he cries, you often will tell him to be quiet.
You are an amazing little boy. We love you so much!

Love
Mom
